Search Tyres by Vehicle Registration

Are you looking for Tyres Size for your vehicle?

When you buy a set of new car tyres Pontypool, getting the correct tyre size is of utmost importance.

Often the decision about the right tyres is (unfortunately) not in our hands alone. Vehicle and rim manufacturers as well as testing institutions influence which tyre width and height can and may be technically driven. Important criteria are: the rim must not touch the brake system, the tyre must not have any point of contact with the wheel bearing, and many other factors. The choice of possible tyres is therefore already strongly limited by external factors. In addition, there are cost and safety aspects: narrow tyres cost less and ensure lower fuel consumption, wider tyres, on the other hand, offer better cornering and proportion the vehicle more favourably and sportily.

So how do you know which tyres are right for your vehicle?

We'll get to the bottom of the matter together and guide you from the search for relevant tyre information in the vehicle registration document to the right choice of technically suitable tyres and the question of appearance.

Please note:

Which tyres technically fit your vehicle is a very important factor when it comes to the roadworthiness of your vehicle. Only approved tyre dimensions may be fitted. Otherwise, the general operating permit of the car will expire!

Understanding tyre sizes

Let us understand the meaning with the help of a sample tyre size:

215/65 R16 98T

Section width: This is the sidewall-to-sidewall width of a tyre, usually rounded off to the nearest 5mm. In rear-wheel-drive vehicles, you may find wider rear tyres for better traction, but they require more steering effort and create higher rolling resistance. Our experts at Sam’s Tyres will be happy to explain this to you in more details if you want, thereby helping you to buy the perfect set of tyres for your car.

Aspect ratio: It is the sidewall height as a percentage of the overall width of a tyre. In this example mentioned above, the profile height is 65% of 215mm.

R: This implies that the tyre has a radial construction, where the ply cords are placed perpendicular to the tyre axis.

Rim diameter: This is the bead-to-bead diameter of the wheel onto which this tyre will be fitted. It is very uncommon for cars to have rims of different sizes, with the obvious exception being the Chrysler Prowler. A common drawback of mixing tyre sizes is that the vehicle will start steering in one particular direction, commonly seen on dirt track racing.

Load rating: This refers to the maximum weight that one tyre can carry. 98 here refers to a load capacity of 750 kg.

Speed Index: This refers to the maximum approved speed under optimal conditions. Here, T stands for a maximum speed of 118 mph.
